A practical guide to making your messaging magnetic by understanding your clients like a best friend
I had a moment on Voxer the other day with a client who shared a really solid goal; she wants to work with “high-profile,” “celebrity-adjacent” clients. (Yes, please. ✨ Let’s manifest that red carpet pipeline.)
But then I asked her the question that stopped her in her tracks:
“Where do they buy their groceries?”
It wasn’t about stalking someone’s Whole Foods receipts. (But I’m not here to judge your weird hobbies…)
It’s about understanding people.
Really understanding them.
Because when we say we want to attract a certain kind of client — especially high-value ones — we need to think like them. Talk like them. Move like them. Not to imitate, but to resonate.
Otherwise, your messaging is a guess. And your marketing? A shot in the dark.
The 360° client view (and why you’re probably missing it)
You’ve likely filled out some version of an “ideal client worksheet” before. Age, income, job title, maybe even favorite books. But here’s the thing I need you to understand…
Knowing someone is a 42-year-old consultant who makes $250K and likes Brené Brown is not enough.
You need to know them on a human level:
Do they use Instacart or love wandering the aisles of Trader Joe’s with a coffee in hand? Maybe a nanny does the shopping and they haven’t set foot in “Da Jewels” in decades (Yes, my Chicago is showing).
Are they scrolling LinkedIn at 6am on Sunday or still hungover from a VIP event the night before?
Do they splurge on designer candles or rummage TJ Max’s dollar section like they’re panning for gold (and enjoy it)?
These might sound like fluffy lifestyle details, but they’re actually deeply strategic.
Because if you don’t know how they move through the world…
How will you know where to show up?
How will you know when to show up?
And how in the hell will you know what to say?
Want premium clients? Learn to think like them.
You can’t shortcut resonance.
If your dream clients are high-performing, high-earning, highly visible… your messaging needs to meet them where they are. That means stepping out of “here’s what I offer” mode and into “here’s what they need to hear right now” energy.
Your offers should speak to their:
Stress points (not just surface-level problems)
Desires (including the unspoken ones)
Decision-making patterns (yes, even the petty ones)
This is why vague marketing doesn’t work. This is why copying templates won’t cut it. This is why throwing your offer into the void with a Canva graphic and a prayer doesn’t pay the bills.
You don’t need to be a mind reader.
But you do need to be obsessed with understanding your people.
⚡️ Today’s Spark: Build the world of your dream client
Make it a creative exercise. A manifestation ritual. A marketing experiment. All of the above.
Ask yourself:
What’s in their fridge right now?
How do they spend their Friday night and Sunday morning?
What’s their guilty pleasure? Their secret fear? Their browser history?
What kind of content stops them mid-scroll?
Paint the picture.
Live in it.
Speak from it.
Because when you show up in the right place, at the right time, with the right message? Everything. changes.
That’s when your dream clients stop scrolling and start listening.
