Why perfectionism is killing your momentum (and how to shift it)

Collecting sketchbooks is apparently a hobby of mine.
Using them, well… that’s another story.

You know the joke: creating crafts and buying craft supplies are two entirely different hobbies. I am, without a doubt, firmly in the latter camp when it comes to sketchbooks. 😅

I have shelves of them — all shapes and sizes. Leather-bound journals. Colorful spiral notebooks. Dot grid, watercolor paper, handmade recycled pages. Some were gifted by thoughtful friends who know me well. Others were irresistible finds during an afternoon errand gone delightfully off-track.

Each one holds potential.
A blank canvas.
A promise.
An invitation.

And yet… most remain untouched.
Crisp. Unmarked. Waiting.

Funny enough, I do love using unlined paper for journaling. There’s something about the open space that feels expansive. Like I can breathe a little more deeply. I’ll write sideways, upside-down, doodle in what would be the margins, skip lines, make lists that turn into rants that turn into revelations. I trust the blank page when it’s for me.

But for nearly everything else?
I hesitate.

I overthink.

I leave the metaphorical page blank.

Why is it that in some areas, a blank sheet of paper excites me — while in others, it feels like pressure?

It’s because blank pages are paradoxes.
They are freedom and responsibility.
They are infinite possibility and the weight of potential.

They whisper, You can make anything you want here.
And also, So… what if it’s not good enough?

In business, we’re confronted with blank pages all the time.

New offers.
New strategies.
New launches.
New directions.

Each one invites us into expansion — but often with a side of panic. We want to make the right move. We want it to work. And so, we freeze. We wait for clarity. We scroll for inspiration. We tell ourselves we’ll start once we have a better plan.

But here’s what journaling taught me:
You don’t need to know the whole story to start writing the first line.
You don’t need a flawless vision to take the first step.
You just need to begin.

The beauty of a blank page — whether in a sketchbook, a journal, or your business — is that it’s yours.

It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It doesn’t have to be permanent.
And if you don’t like where it’s going? You can always turn the page.

So let me ask you this:

👉 What blank pages are you facing right now in your business (or life)?
👉 What have you been waiting to begin — just because you’re unsure of how it’ll turn out?
👉 What might happen if you started anyway?

Remember:
The only thing worse than making a mess… is never making your mark at all.
