Sprk'd blogging process checklist

What if I told you that with every blog post you write, you can consistently triple the amount of traffic to your site? Would I have your attention? Good.

A blog post has to captivate the reader from the very first line. Ask them the exact question they’ve been searching the answer to. Blow their mind with a crazy statistic if your blog post aims to explain what’s important to them. Ask the reader to visualize something and instantly transport them into your world. Hook them.

Reel ’em in with a good headline

Capturing a reader’s interest starts with getting them to click over to your blog post in the first place. Don’t overlook the title— make sure it’s informative enough to capture the essence of the content without being dull. The title is often the only thing potential readers see and is so, SO important. In fact, 80% of readers don’t even make it past the headline! Use standout words related to your topic to make it interesting. Your headlines should create a sense of urgency, be unique, be useful, and ultra-specific!

Get to the point

To have an impactful blog post on your website, it’s important to have a clear, focused idea of what the point of it is before you ever start writing.

Write your premise down on a post-it note and stick it in front of your face if necessary. Create an outline with subheadings to make sure you’re covering the main ideas you want to convey. Periodically revert to your main premise as you write to make sure you’re in line through the whole post.

Make sure you lay out clear sub-headings in your outline. Once you solidify those, it’s time to write. Write down all the sub-headings, and fill in the content in between.  Don’t sweat your first draft too much, start writing and get your thoughts down. Get in a good flow, and don’t worry about creating THE PERFECT first draft. You’ll eventually end up with a great second draft, and an excellent third draft as you go through the editing process.

Go back and take out anything fluffy. Your reader is here because they want to learn from you, not because they want to hear your best one-liners. Use genuine personality but make sure it’s not overdone, and always to the benefit of readability. One of our many mantras at Sprk’d is, “write first to inform—then to entertain.”

But wait! There’s more…

After you publish your post, analyze the statistics on the post. Check views, conversion rates (how many people clicked your call-to-action or signed up for newsletters), and the source of your traffic. What garnered the most amount of readers? Then make adjustments to push the post through those sources drawing the most interested visitors.

To have an impactful blog post on your website that attracts interested readers (and better yet… potential buyers), you have to follow a sharp process that optimizes the value the post provides for viewers.

The process is critical. Everyone will, and should, curate their own writing process depending on what proves to work. To get you started, we want to share our blog post writing process in the checklist below.

Follow this checklist to write a useful blog post every time:

  • Identify your target persona (Who is your post talking to? Spoiler alert: “everyone” is NOT an answer.)
  • Define your topic and point-of-view. This is crucial to writing a useful blog post
  • Identify top keywords and research them, draft meta description and alt tags for images—this will help with SEO
  • Outline your blog post. Start with Subheadings that will guide the post—this ensures focus and readability throughout
  • Write your post. Don’t worry about editing too much at this point—just write.
  • Walk away, do something else, go play outside. Stepping away from the writing process and coming back to it with a fresh perspective will help you focus on the most important parts of your blog post.
  • Re-read the point-of-view and outline—remind yourself why you are writing this blog post
  • Proofread and edit the post—concentrate on the main purpose
  • Get a second set of eyes to proofread post.
  • Create five possible titles—make them compelling and include target keyphrases whenever possible.
  • Find graphics for the featured image and add other relevant images throughout the post
  • If possible, add a relevant link to a previously published post or resource. This helps with SEO and keeps readers moving throughout your site.
  • Add a call-to-action at the end of the blog post. Provide more value to the readers and create an interactive connection.
  • Pick the title you think your readers are most attracted to (use your buyer personas as a guide to put you in the reader’s shoes)
  • Upload, schedule/publish blog post
  • Share with friends and through social media
  • Analyze views and interactions
  • Re-share through the networks that provided the most views and interactions
  • Wash, rinse, repeat
  • Have fun with it!

This process was curated through the hands-on-experience of our team. We consistently try new methods, test their impact, and adjust if necessary. That’s the essence of creating an inspirational blog post that attracts interested readers. Find what works best for your target audience, your industry, and your goal. And, don’t forget, have fun with it!
