Have you ever been randomly followed by someone on Twitter? And a few days later, after you haven’t followed them back… they unfollow you? Not only is this uncool, in fact, this kind of behavior can get that person suspended on Twitter.

You see, Twitter has some rules. Some very sensible rules. And this kind of behavior is considered spam.

Twitter lists the following behavior as spam:

“If you repeatedly follow and unfollow people, whether to build followers or to garner more attention for your profile”

“If you have followed and/or unfollowed large amounts of users in a short time period, particularly by automated means (aggressive following or follower churn).”

Twitter isn’t about the number of followers you have

Remember, at the end of the day, Twitter is about conversation. It’s about following the people and brands you’re interested in and connecting with them. It’s about curating a news feed of information that you want to see and sharing content others want to see from you.

So if you want more followers, don’t follow random people in hopes to get a follow back—that’s just spammy. Twitter instead advises that:

“The best way to gain friends and fans on Twitter is to engage with people, follow others whose Tweets are interesting or meaningful to you, and be an active part of the Twitter community by reading and posting high-quality information.”
